A Guide to Birding in Georgia

Oriole Volumes 70-71 PDF

FTF Compilation

Butterflies, dragonflies, damselflies, moths and other insects make such delicate and beautiful subjects, and often a little more cooperative than birds. Though we are neophytes in the realm of identification, it is a fascinating study. Some of the photos below may have been edited for aesthetics, including color alteration in some cases (but not of the bug itself). If anything is labeled "???" or you see a misidentification, please send me an
email!

If you are interested in butterflies in Georgia, you will love Jim Flynn's
Georgia Butterflies Website , with an extensive collection of awesome photos of these winged wonders, organized by county or species. This is a powerful tool for helping to identify butterflies and skippers because the website's extensive library shows the great variation in appearance that a field guide alone cannot match. Giff Beaton has organized a similar page for identifying Georgia Dragonflies ; be sure to pick up a copy of his new book, Dragonflies and Damselflies of Georgia and the Southeast. Recommended Butterfly books include Butterflies of the East Coast by Rick Chech and Guy Tudor, and Butterflies through Binoculars (Eastern) by Jeffrey Glassberg; you may also be interested in Caterpillars of Eastern North America, by David L. Wagner.
